Strategic competence is acknowledged to be able to explain variations in language test performance. Research with adult language test-takers has shown that strategic competence has dual components: strategic knowledge and strategic processing. Of the two components, strategic processing, which is state-like, unstable, and tends to fluctuate from contexts to contexts, is more closely related to language test performance. Tutkin pro gradu -työssäni S2-oppijoiden käsityksiä englannin kielen käytöstä ja asemasta Suomessa. Aiemmat tutkimukset englannin kielen käytöstä ja asemasta Suomessa ovat keskittyneet suomalaisten äidinkielenpuhujien käsityksiin. Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää minkälaisia käsityksiä S2-oppijoilla on englannin käytöstä ja asemasta Suomessa sekä heidän omassa elämässään että yleisemmällä tasolla. Lisäksi tutkin S2-oppijoiden asenteita englannin kieltä kohtaan. Tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää vieraiden kielten yliopisto-opiskelijoiden kokemuksia kielijännityksestä. Tavoitteena oli tarkastella missä tilanteissa opiskelijat kokevat kielijännitystä, mistä se heiden mielestään johtuu, millaisia vaikutuksia jännityksellä on ja millaisia keinoja opiskelijoilla on pärjätä oman jännityksen kanssa. Tutkimuksessa keskeisessä roolissa ovat opiskelijoiden omat käsitykset ja kokemukset. Despite this, 100 of millions of individuals in India are still illiterate. As English medium education sweeps the country, many are forced to learn in a language which is foreign to them. Those living in poverty further struggle to learn English as it tends to be a language which they have no prior exposure to and no support at home for. Low-quality schools and poor instructional methods further exacerbate the problem. Vironkielisten osallistujien kielitaito Yleisten kielitutkintojen suomen kielen testissä

Tarkastelemme tässä artikkelissa vironkielisten suomen oppijoiden osallistumista Suomen kansallisen kielitestin, Yleisten kielitutkintojen, keskitason tutkintoon ja heidän kielitaitoprofiiliaan tutkintotulosten valossa. Vertaamme tuloksia yleiseen tutkintomenestykseen sekä osallistujien taustaan ja pohdimme suomen kielen asemaa oppimisen kohteena vironkielisten näkökulmasta. Analyysimetodina käytämme kuvailevaa tilastollista analyysia sekä tilastollista päättelyä. Tulokset osoittavat, että vironkieliset osallistujat menestyvät tutkinnossa hyvin ja erityisesti ymmärtämistaidot ovat tutkitussa ryhmässä vahvat. The present paper reports on a qualitative study investigating how Iranian learners of English as a foreign language understand culture and the extent to which this understanding meets the needs of efficient intercultural communication. In order to gather data, in-depth semistructured interviews were conducted with eight participants. The interviews were designed and thematically analyzed using Baker’s (2011) model of intercultural awareness. This article discusses the significance of CLIL education from the students’ perspective. Two former CLIL students, who received extensive English CLIL education in primary school in 1990s, were interviewed during the summer 2016. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the memories they had of CLIL and how they perceived its influence on their life courses. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis with a theory-oriented framework.
